Alex Ferreira learned the game of chess in Portugal before moving to Toronto in his adolescent years.

He joined the Bayview Games Club in 2003 where he was a member until the Club’s closure in 2007. Alex has also been a member of the Scarborough Chess Club from 2008 – 2011 and the Annex Chess Club from 2010 – 2015 both as a player as well as an arbiter.

Through most of this time Alex was also a member and organizer for the Hart House Chess Club. From 2008 to date, he has represented the University of Toronto as a student, player, tournament director, and arbiter, in various competitions, such as the Pan-American Inter- Collegiate Championships and the Canadian Universities Championships.

An eager world traveler, Alex had the opportunity to partake in several chess tournaments across Europe, from Spain to Greece to Iceland and see various formats and forms of how tournaments are run, elsewhere.

Alex is currently a FIDE Arbiter, having presided over numerous events locally, including notorious events such as the Canadian Open, the Canadian Youth Chess Championships, and a handful of title-norm-events across Canada. He has also served as an arbiter at a unique chess event, King Mohammed VI’s Cup in Casablanca, Morocco.

Alex has furthermore accompanied the University of Toronto team in a prestigious 100th Anniversary Event in Nankai University, Tianjin, China, where Universities came from across the world to compete and honor the University’s legacy.

He is now embarking on a new venture, the Toronto Chess Centre, as a co-founder, hoping to bring this taste of worldly exposure in chess, home to the local chess community.
