General Floor Manager
Alercio may be the only member of the Toronto Chess Centre team who has never played chess, and yet, somehow, he is one of the people who makes sure everyone else gets to play.
As the General Floor Manager, Alercio is the ultimate all-arounder. He manages the tournament floor, keeps crowds under control, helps families find their way around and makes sure the space is ready for action. If there are tables to set up, tablecloths to straighten, boards and pieces to organize, trophies and medals to arrange or a loudspeaker that needs to be working, Alercio is on it.
His role begins long before the first game and often ends long after the last one. He helps transport the team and equipment to events, transforms an empty room into a tournament hall and makes sure everything and everyone is where they need to be.
What Alercio enjoys most, however, is the people. He loves interacting with the parents and kids who come through the Centre and has become a familiar and reassuring presence at our events. While he may not know the difference between a Sicilian and a Scandinavian, he knows exactly how to keep a chess tournament running smoothly.
Alercio is proof that you don’t have to play chess to be an important part of the chess community. Sometimes, the person behind the scenes is the one making the whole game possible.
